Frank Paulin (American, b. 1926), I Love You, Chicago, 1951, gelatin silver print, signed, titled, and dated on verso, 14 x 11" Gift of Bruce Silverstein Gallery, New York, NY, 2010.011

The Bruce Silverstein Gallery generously donates a selection of 10 gelatin silver prints by American mid-20th century photographer Frank Paulin in 2009.

Paulin's education in the arts began at the age of 16 when he joined the Chicago-based Whitaker-Christiansen Studio as an apprentice. He joined the Army in 1944, and as a member of the Signal Corps, he began photographing the wartime devastation in German cities. For the next fifty years, Paulin continued to photograph what he called "poetic accidents," expanding his territory from New Orleans to Paris (excerpted from the catalogue essay "Frank Paulin: Out of the Limelight," January 19-February 23, 2008, Bruce Silverstein Gallery).
